On Pain

“Pain is just blocked energy, blocked qi.”  I would say this to myself many days as I practiced the reverse prayer mudra (pictured above), looking up at the sky through the redbud tree overhead.  This saying applies not only to physical pain but to emotional pain as well.  There are many ways to unblock energy in the body, including qigong, acupuncture, self-inquiry, and managing your thoughts.  And sometimes what’s called for is just gentle physical repetition, as was the case for me with this mudra; by doing this particular mudra in my daily qigong practice, I inched toward this goal over the course of a year or so.  I never strained, I just did it to the extent that I could, and now it’s mine. 😊
